National Institute of Engineering – Mysore established IBM and OpenPOWER centre of Excellence In Artificial Intelligence and Cloud called “SMILE” (Simulation, Machine Intelligence and LEarning) lab. The Institute is collaborated with ‘IBM’, a multinational technology company, to develop ‘IBM Centre of Excellence’ (COE). The operations at the newly established centre commenced from March 1st week, and a Tech Session was also held, which focused on the AI-related topics.

The National Institute of Engineering (NIE) is a grant-in-aid institution and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. NIE got autonomous status from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, in 2007.  It has been accredited by NAAC.

It is one of the 14 colleges in Karnataka that has been recognized under the MHRD-World Bank-sponsored Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) in all the three phases. All the Departments of NIE are recognized as Research Centre under VTU and AICTE for QIP.  Currently, NIE offers 7 UG and 12 PG Programmes.  Faculty has been the main strength of NIE.  They impart their vast knowledge to the students by using conventional methods of the teaching-learning process as well as contemporary ones.

This collaboration between NIE and IBM will focus on advancing AI research in the areas of  Edge AI, Agriculture, and Smart Cities. The projects that would be taken up include Edge AI solutions, increasing crop yield using AI algorithms, and applying AI-based solutions to support safer transportation systems and better ways of managing traffic, among others.

SMILE lab is equipped with following computing infrastrctutes:
  1. IBM AC922 with 2 NVidia Graphics cards
  2. 20 Dell OptiPlex 3070 Machines

Recently, our 6th Sem CS students Anubhav Singh, Sai Ayachit, Shyam, and Vinayaka Patil have successfully completed the project "Competitive Analysis of the top gradient boosting machine learning algorithms" mentored by Sangeeth Keeriyadath. The code is hosted at github repo.
