DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL AND PRODUCTION ENGINEERING
The undergraduate programme in Industrial and Production Engineering was initially introduced in 1981 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering; however, realizing the importance of Production Engineering, a separatefull-fledged Department was set up in 1985 with the primary objective of carrying out teaching and research in the board areas of production and industrial engineering with specialization in Metal Cutting, Machine Tools, CAD-CAM, Robotics, Management, Finance and Quality Control, Advanced Manufacturing Practices, Advanced Materials and their characterization and many more. The Department started the Post-Graduate programme in Production Engineering & System Technology (PEST) in the year 1987. The department has a team of dedicated teaching and technical staff and has the credit of having maximum number of Doctorates in its team. The faculty of the Department not only engage in teaching, also carry out research and have successfully supervise number of research scholars to get their Doctoral degrees. The Department has well equipped Industrial Engineering, Machine Tool and Metrology Laboratory and CAD / CAM Centre. The department has established a research laboratory for Composite Material Fabrication and Testing where number of Ph.D and M.Tech scholars are pursuing their degrees. The Department has received research funds from DST, UGC, AICTE, VGST, VTU and other funding agencies worth INR 4.8crores; also the department has received world bank aided funds to develop and modernize its laboratoriesunder Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) Phase I, II and III. With these infrastructure, modern facilities and highly qualified staff, the department aims for imparting excellent technical, experimental, managerial and soft skills to its students. Both the undergraduate and post graduate programmes of the department are NBA accredited in line with outcome based education (OBE), thus maintaining global standards in teaching – learning process.
In addition to providing excellent training to students in academics, the endeavor of the Department is to shape overall personality of its students. The Department has established Industrial and Production Engineers Association (IPEA) which organizes number of co-curricular and extracurricular activities. These activities include organization of Technical quiz, Paper and Poster presentation contest and many sports activities etc., throughout the year. It organizes technical talks in Emerging Technologies from experts and also industrial visits to various reputed industries for the benefit of students. It facilitates its student members ingettingindustrial internship. IPEA is also running a departmental library to its members, which has over 1000 volumes of text books. The Department has produced manyeminent engineers who are excelling in their chosen field, thus contributing to the cause of the society
Programs
