NIE-Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (NECAT)

The NIE-Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (NECAT) was established in 2009 in collaboration with Volvo-Eicher to impart training on automobile technology to students, faculty members of engineering colleges, and industrial and vocational training institutes.

Introduction

The NIE–Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (NECAT) was established in 2009 through a collaborative initiative between The National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysuru and Volvo–Eicher Commercial Vehicles (VECV). The centre was created to strengthen industry–academia collaboration and to provide specialized training and skill development in contemporary automobile technologies.

NECAT serves as a platform for students, faculty members, and industry professionals to gain practical exposure to modern commercial vehicle systems, automotive electronics, and emerging mobility technologies. Through hands-on training, advanced learning tools, and industry-oriented programs, the centre aims to develop competent engineers equipped to meet the evolving demands of the automotive and mobility sector.

Overview

NIE- Eicher center for automobile technology (NECAT) is a center of excellence jointly established under the ambit of Industry-Institute Academic collaboration by The National Institute of Engineering, Mysore and Volvo-Eicher commercial Vehicle (VECV) in the year 2009. NECAT has state of the art training facilities to attract students and trainees from all over the country as well as from abroad. NECAT aims to train the students with an objective of providing exposure to commercial vehicle technology and its electronic system. Teaching is imparted through new generation teaching-learning methods and aids such as blended mode of training, cut-section working models, multimedia, audio-visual aids, and Virtual laboratory. It has greatly enhanced the brand of NIE Mechanical Engineering department.

Vision

To be a leading platform for training, skill development, and innovation in modern automobile and mobility technologies, fostering strong industry–academia collaboration and contributing to sustainable and intelligent transportation systems.

Objectives

  • To provide hands-on training and skill development in contemporary automobile technologies including vehicle electronics, EVs, and emission control  systems.
  • To bridge  the gap between academic learning and industry requirements through practical exposure to commercial vehicle systems and components
  • To promote experiential learning by enabling students to work on real  automotive subsystems, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance practices
  • To encourage innovation, student projects, and applied research in automotive engineering and emerging mobility technologies.
  • To support the development of sustainable mobility solutions aligned with global goals such as clean energy, low-emission transportation, and responsible engineering practices.

Facilities

The NIE–Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (NECAT) is equipped with modern training infrastructure to support effective learning, skill development, and hands-on practice in automobile engineering.

Key facilities at NECAT include:

  • Two  classrooms with a seating capacity of 35 students each, equipped with  modern audio-visual teaching aids, charts, and demonstration models.
  • Automotive  training workshop with major commercial vehicle components and assemblies  for practical learning.
  • BS6  compliant engines and emission systems, enabling students to understand  modern emission control technologies.
  • Transmission  systems including 5-speed, 7-speed, and 9-speed gearboxes used in  commercial vehicles.
  • Exhaust  After Treatment System (EATS) modules for studying BS6 emission control technologies.
  • Electrical  harnesses, sensors, and electronic modules used in modern commercial vehicles.
  • Three commercial vehicle trucks available for hands-on training and  demonstration of vehicle subsystems.
  • Automotive  reference library with manuals, technical documents, and learning  resources related to automobile and commercial vehicle technology.

These facilities enable students and trainees to gain practical exposure to real automotive systems, supporting both training programs and student project activities.

Courses Offered

The NIE–Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (NECAT) offers a range of training and skill development programs designed for students as well as industry professionals. These programs combine theoretical understanding with hands-on exposure to modern commercial vehicle technologies.

Programs for Students

Training

A foundational training program called Basic Course in Automobile Technology (BCAT), designed for undergraduate students of Mechanical, Automobile, Electrical, Electronics, and related disciplines.

Duration: 22–25 hours

The course introduces students to fundamental automotive systems, commercial vehicle technology, and basic vehicle electronics through a blend of theory and practical sessions.

Skill Development Programs

NECAT offers specialized skill development programs aimed at developing industry-relevant competencies in automobile technology and vehicle systems. These programs can be designed based on institutional or industry requirements.

Duration: Typically ranges from 15 days to 45 weeks, depending on the depth and scope of the training.

Internships

NECAT also offers internship opportunities for students, providing hands-on experience with real automotive components, diagnostic systems, and commercial vehicle subsystems. Internships allow students to gain practical exposure and strengthen their technical skills through project-based learning.

Programs for Industry Professionals

Modular Training Programs

NECAT offers customized modular courses for industry personnel, technicians, and professionals. These programs are designed based on specific industry requirements, where the course content, duration, and training modules are tailored to suit the needs of the organization

Such programs focus on specialized areas such as automotive electronics, vehicle diagnostics, emission control systems, transmission systems, and maintenance practices in commercial vehicles.
